On 19 April 1907, Lieutenant Moraes Rego took over as the first officer in charge of the Central Station. From then on he devoted his career to naval communications, rarely leaving the field and only for short periods.

As a Rear Admiral, he was Director-General of Navigation from January 1939 to August 1941, a forerunner of today's Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation. He reached the rank of Vice Admiral and died in December 1941.

Navy Staff Ordinance 178 of 2008 named him patron of Naval Communications and set 28 March as Naval Communications Day.
